Will Ketamine Help me?
Ketamine therapy is especially useful for those with depression, anxiety, or PTSD where more traditional kinds of treatment either have not worked, or only worked partially. Most of my patients have found it helpful, but many do best if they continue more traditional medicines.
Ketamine by itself can help you. Ketamine plus psychotherapy plus a more mental-health-supporting lifestyle will help you more.
All three are synergistic. Meaning they are better together and they help each other. Ketamine by itself can improve your mental health. I tell my patients it can make you emotionally stronger. However, on its own, if you do not do anything to change your life, its positive effects can gradually fade away.
A good psychotherapist will help you develop strategies for how to think differently or act differently. Because of this, therapy can augment what ketamine does and help you develop stronger mental health over the long term. But if you are severely depressed, a therapist’s suggestions may seem to be way beyond your ability. That is how ketamine augments therapy.
The third piece of this puzzle is a mental‑health‑supporting lifestyle. Doing things like moderate exercise if you are sedentary, or increasing socialization if you are isolated, can improve your mental health.
Ketamine Is Not For Everybody
There are many specific issues I will need to go over with you during your first visit to help decide if ketamine is safe for you.
Age requirment
Treatment is available for adults 18 and older. While we do not treat children, patients aged 16–17 may be evaluated with full parental participation. An adult support person is always required.
Support Requirement
A trusted adult support person is required for every session. This person must be calm, reassuring, and available to assist with medication tracking, safety monitoring, and recovery support.
Blood Pressure
You should not use ketamine if you have Uncontrolled hypertension. Most patients will not need to check their blood pressure before ketamine sessions, unless you have a history of hypertensive crisis. Â
Cardiac Health
Unstable heart conditions, recent cardiac events, or uncontrolled heart failure are absolute contraindications. We prioritize your safety by evaluating your cardiac status before initiating ketamine therapy.
Ketamine is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.Â
